FAQ

What You Should Know About Insurance Claims

  • Your out-of-pocket expense should never exceed your deductible.
  • What you receive from your insurance company is an estimate for your repairs, not a settlement for your repairs. The total you actually receive when all is completed is the settlement amount. Sometimes this is less than the estimate, but many times it can be more than the original estimate.
  • You cannot be canceled for weather related claims. To be eligible for cancellation you need to have three non-weather related claims in 3 years.
  • The Texas Department of Insurance recommends you have your contractor present when the adjuster inspects your property. Many times adjusters overlook something or misadjust a claim. Having someone to represent your interests is key to having a properly adjusted claim. ASG provides this, free of charge. Let us watch out for you; that’s part of what we do.

What is DEPRECIATION?

“Depreciation” is the funds the insurance company withholds from you after they have adjusted your claim.

Example: $10,000 claim with $1,000 deductible
$10,000 Claim
-$1,000 Deductible
-$3,000 Depreciation (Recoverable or Non Recoverable)
= $6,000 Net Claim

There are multiple reasons your insurance company withholds these funds:

  • Your insurance company wants to be sure you actually get the work done. They will not give you all the money owed to you unless they receive a completed invoice from a contractor.
  • Your insurance company wants to pay you only what you spend. In your policy it states your insurance company will only pay you “up to what you spend”.
  • You are responsible for the first portion of your claim. This is called your “deductible”. By withholding monies allotted to you, your insurance ensures you actually pay your deductible. By not releasing funds until they have a final invoice from a contractor, they see what monies you actually spent and ONLY pay you up to that amount less your full deductible.

You will receive from your insurance only what you spend less your deductible, no matter how many bids you get, you will always just owe the deductible. Your insurance will match your contractor’s bid less your deductible.

Because this is how replacement cost policies are set up, you should choose your contractor based on quality of workmanship, quality of materials and labor, as well as how your property will be taken care of during the job and after completion.

  1. Do I really need a new roof?

Most storm damage goes unnoticed with observation from the ground. You need a trained eye on your roof to closely inspect for damage. Storm damage may not cause your roof to leak immediately. It does, however, shorten your roof’s life span and you may start having leaks within a few months if it is not replaced.

  2. My insurance said I have no damage but my neighbors are getting new roofs – what do I do?

All Service Group, Inc. is experienced in getting your claim handled properly. If your insurance company stated you do not have damage, we would like to give you a second opinion. After inspecting your roof closely, if we do find damage, we’ll take care of the process of getting your roof re-inspected and work on your behalf to get your claim accepted. We have been successful in getting MANY homeowners new roofs after the original insurance adjuster declined the claim. Our attention to detail during inspection, and our ability to communicate effectively in valid construction science terms, often uncovers signs of damage many insurance adjusters erroneously overlook. Many homeowners indeed DO have damage unknowingly because their insurance adjuster didn’t do their job thoroughly or made an honest mistake.

  3. What would I have to pay?

Your insurance company covers the cost of your repairs minus your deductible. With normal deductibles, you often have very little out of pocket expense, but it depends on your policy. We are happy to help you interpret and understand your policy benefits.

  6. Do I need to be home while you are doing repairs?

There may be times you will want or need to be home if we are doing interior repairs but if we are only doing exterior repairs it’s at your discretion.

  7. My insurance check has my mortgage company’s name on it – so what do I do?

Each mortgage company has its own unique policy regarding insurance payments. It is important to notify your ASG project manager if your mortgage company’s name is included on your insurance drafts. They can go over the finer details with you at that time. However, rest assured, this is not uncommon and we can guide you correctly on the path so you can obtain the funds you are due.
